Mangroves have the ability to absorb up to four times more carbon dioxide by area than upland terrestrial forests (Donato et al., 2011).The remarkable traits of the mangrove ecosystem translate into a wide variety of goods and services that we benefit from. Coastal development impacts may be direct (e.g., land filling, dredging, coral and sand mining for construction) or indirect (e.g., increased runoff of sediment and pollutants). The results reveal a wide range in the intensity of impacts, providing insight into where coastal bays and seagrass beds are most affected by human activities and need management attention. Coastal development linked to human settlements, industry, aquaculture, and infrastructure can cause severe impacts on near shore ecosystems, particularly coral reefs. Globally, the primary and emergent anthropogenic threats to mangroves include (Spalding et al., 2010; Van Bochove et al, 2014): In large, unnatural quantities these natural materials can be considered a pollutant.
